One very common problem is snoring, a noise resulting from a partial closure of the airway during sleep. It is estimated that over 45% of the population snores, leading to disrupted sleep for the sufferer and their bed partner.
Ranging from 50-100 decibels, the equivalent of a pneumatic drill, snoring can lead to relationship issues, daytime sleepiness, increased stress and depression if left untreated. Less often, snoring can also take place as part of a more serious condition, clinically referred to as ‘Obstructive Sleep Apnoea’ (OSA), which is a more serious condition that is potentially life-threatening.

A quick and easy process
Following an initial consultation with Dr Catherine, if you decide that you would like to go ahead then we carry out an oral 3D scan of your upper and lower palates. This is a quick and easy process (no pain) that enables us to obtain a 3D digital model of your inner mouth. We then send this 3D digital data off to the Sleepwell labs, so that precise moulds can be generated in order to produce your custom fitted device. Once the device has been manufactured it is sent out.
What is obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA)?
In extreme cases, partial closure of the airways can result in a drop in oxygen reaching the lungs. Equally, individuals can stop breathing all together, with the sleeper starting to breath again with a gasp, choke or snort. This is indicative of OSA, where our body is starved of oxygen for a short period of time. The body typically responds by a partial awakening due to an adrenaline surge, leaving sufferers often exhausted during the day.
